Quaternary influx of proximal coarse-grained dust altered circum-Mediterranean soil productivity

January 11, 2021
/

A paper by Rivka Amit, Yehouda Enzel, and Onn Crouvi published in Geology points out that the late Pleistocene loess (and coarse silt quartz) episode is also responsible for the thicker, silicate-rich soils developed on the tops of the Judean Mountains, a carbonate terrain. The long-distance from such coarse silt sources prevented the development of thick soils on the carbonate mountains of the Galilee and Create, where only fine gains arrive from distant sources in the Sahara and Arabia.
