Professor Dan Yaalon, a pioneer in soil research in Israel and worldwide, passed away on January 29, 2014. His work, which successfully integrated agricultural and earth sciences in soil research, continues to serve as a cornerstone in the study of soil formation in Israel and around the world.
Professor Yaalon published over 120 papers and edited several books. The book "Paleopedology" (1970) is considered a milestone in soil research. The book demonstrates Yaalon's predictive ability, both in his capacity to develop new research fields and his influence on their development.
His research, which focused on systemic changes in soil properties over time and space, continues to provide a basis for theoretical discourse and a repository of new ideas.
In our region, his work focused on pedogenesis processes, sediment analysis, the influence of climate on sediments and soils, and more.
Throughout his career, Professor Yaalon received numerous awards, including the Dokuchaev Medal in 2010, and honorary memberships in various national and international organizations. In Israel, he was honored with an honorary membership in the Geological Society of Israel in 2001 for his significant contribution to the fields of geology and pedology.
May his memory be blessed.
