Prof. Hagai Ron, a leading scientist at the Institute of Earth Sciences, was a prominent figure in Israel in the field of paleomagnetism and the study of the magnetic properties of the Earth's geological past.
Hagai was born in Kibbutz Beit HaArava, grew up in Kibbutz Cabri, and pursued his academic studies at the Hebrew University. His doctoral dissertation focused on the use of paleomagnetic methods to reconstruct the movement of rock masses. After completing post-doctoral training at Stanford University, Hagai returned to Israel and established the Paleomagnetic Laboratory at the Geophysical Institute. In 2001, he relocated the laboratory to the Hebrew University and joined the faculty of the Institute of Earth Sciences.
Hagai developed innovative methods for utilizing archaeological metal alloys and made significant contributions to the understanding of Israel's geological history and the region. He was a dedicated mentor to his students, collaborated with numerous researchers from various fields, and published over 60 scientific papers in his diverse research areas.
Hagai passed away on September 10, 2012, in his kibbutz, Cabri.
He will be fondly remembered by his colleagues.
