Late Paleozoic oxygenation of marine environments supported by dolomite U-Pb dating

Ben-Israel et al. develop a new proxy for oxygen levels in seawater, based on U-Pb dating of dolomite. They show a step-increase in O₂ at 400 million years, supporting oceans that were largely oxygen-limited at the ‘dawn’ of animal life.
