Prof. Hagai Ron, a member of the Institute of Earth Sciences, was a leading scientist in Israel in the field of paleomagnetism and the study of the Earth's magnetic properties in the geological past.

Hagai was born in Kibbutz Beit Arava, grew up in Kibbutz Cabri and did his academic studies at the Hebrew University. His doctoral thesis dealt with the use of paleomagnetic methods to reconstruct the movement of rock masses. After completing post-doctoral training at Stanford University, Hagai returned to Israel and established the Paleomagnetic Laboratory at the Geophysical Institute. In 2001 he transferred the laboratory to the Hebrew University and joined the faculty of the Earth Sciences Institute.

Hagai developed new methods for using archaeological metal slag and contributed greatly to the understanding of the geological history of Israel and the region. Hagai was a very loyal guide to his students, collaborated with a large number of researchers from various fields and published over 60 scientific works in his various fields of research.

Hagai died on September 10, 2012 at Kibbutz Cabri.

He will be fondly remembered by his friends.
